5 Simple Ways to Stay Motivated When Pursuing a Dream
It's easy to get motivation, but how do you maintain it? Here are 5 tips that will help you along your journey, no matter what your journey is.
1. Visualize your goals
This one seems obvious. But it goes much deeper than setting a goal one day and forgetting about it. Keep your goals at the forefront of your mind at all times. Use images, phone reminders, and notes to yourself. Keep it simple. Put your goals up on your bedroom wall or in your bathroom so you can see them at the start and end of each day. Let your goals become your thoughts. Let your thoughts become your actions.
2. Remove negativity from your life
Once you identify your dreams, you must eliminate the dream killers! And the #1 killer of dreams and motivation is negativity. So you must remove it from your mind completely. You must believe that you are good enough. You must believe that you CAN accomplish what is in your heart. And you must tell yourself this everyday!
If you have people in your life that are always negative (friends, family, co-workers, social media friends, etc), you must isolate yourself from them because their negativity is infectious. There are certain people that need to be kept at a distance and/or unfollowed. If they get mad, feel free to keep it real with them. Maybe they'll change.
And be very careful with what you watch on television and through the media. It is a breeding ground for subconscious negativity.
3. Create a daily motivational routine
Once you eliminate the negative, replace it with the positive through a motivational routine. Personal motivation is just like any muscle. It must be built and maintained. First, find your sources of motivation. These sources will vary person to person, but simple examples are: YouTube videos, books, motivational speakers, music, etc. Once you have identified these sources, use them EVERYDAY! Designate at least 30 minutes a day to "train" your motivation with your goals in mind. Watch that video, read that book, listen to that speech. After completing your training, you will feel much more positive about where you are going.
4. Create a support group
Pursuing a dream can be a rough journey. Even after removing negativity from your life and establishing a motivational routine, you can still get frustrated. So, it is essential to have a support group: one or more like minded people who can support and motivate each other through the good and bad times. People you can share your triumphs and failures with, knowing that they will be genuinely happy for you and be there for you. Whether it is family, friends, a significant other, mentors, or social media friends, this is incredibly important. Feeling completely alone or having the wrong people around you can be devastating.
5. Celebrate your progress
When setting a huge goal, we often lose sight of the small steps we have taken to get closer to that goal, causing us to get down on ourselves. Remember, huge goals do not happen by the flip of a switch. There are MANY STEPS that must be taken to reach that goal. So, instead of focusing solely on how far you have to go, celebrate how far you've come! Count the steps you've taken so far and be proud of yourself. Your journey, although unfinished, will still inspire others.
I hope these tips help you stay motivated along your journey. Good luck!
